Hobbies can tell you a lot about a person. Local businesswoman Janet Shaner spends much of her free time tracing her family roots. “It’s relaxing, but there’s also the thrill of the hunt,” she says. Janet recently learned, while tracing her family roots back to the ports of New Orleans and San Francisco, that her grandmother was a young child and living in San Francisco when the earthquake shook the area in 1906. For Janet, it’s fascinating to make this connection with someone from her past.

It’s only fitting that genealogy has become a passion for Janet. After all, family is the center of her universe, both personally and professionally speaking. She relishes time spent with her husband, Paul. Whether it’s a local dinner and a movie or traveling cross-country to a famous historical site, she and Paul enjoy savoring the good life together. Travel, however, is at the top of their list of favorite things to do. Often, their excursions are to visit one of their three children, all of whom study at California universities.

Branching Out

There’s a saying “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.” In Janet’s case, all her children became involved in 4-H just like she did when she was a child. Growing up an active member of 4-H, she held leadership positions and learned about working with people and animals. “4-H had a huge impact on my life,” she remembers. “It taught me responsibility, public speaking and how to connect with others.” It also inspired her to earn a bachelor’s degree in Food Processing from California Polytechnic State University. Janet enjoyed watching her children benefit as well from their 4-H experiences. “I can tell it made just as much a difference in their lives as it did in mine,” she says. Janet and her family have always enjoyed the outdoors, nature and animals. “We enjoyed spending time with each other and making time for outdoor excursions,” she adds. Anyone who knows this dynamic businesswoman will tell you that family has always been at the top of her priorities. For Janet, there is no more important relationship than with your family members. But Janet knows that fostering strong relationships is the key to everything in life, from her family to her friends to her work helping clients with their investments.
